What you need to know about coal and the Intermountain Power Station

The Intermountain Power Station in Delta, UT is operated by the Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power, and provides power to municipal utilities in CA and UT.

While Angelnos use the power generated at Intermountain, local communities in UT bear the true cost of the plant’s toxic pollution. Large western coal plants like Intermountain also threaten the air quality at our National Parks and Wilderness Areas, and consume massive quantities of water – an increasingly precious resource in the Southwest.

Citizen activism in UT and CA prevented the construction of an additional 900MW coal fired unit at Intermountain in 2009. That same year, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s pledged to make LA a coal-free city by 2020. Now, people throughout Los Angeles are calling on City Council and the Department of Water and Power to live up to that pledge and stop purchasing power from Intermountain. It’s time to fully retire this coal plant and make a transition to clean, renewable energy.
